Model Documentation Specialist

Job Description & Qualification

Because our challenges are so new, members of our Machine Learning team need strong creative problem-solving skills and the technical background to implement solutions. Our research environment affords team members the opportunity to utilize a variety of statistical and machine learning methods with the freedom and encouragement to pursue alternative approaches to solving problems. Whether developing new products or identifying novel approaches to core models, we are continuously seeking the next big ideas to move our business forward.

As a Model Documentation Specialist at Upstart, you'll make an impact by documenting, creating content and updating the knowledge management system for our statistical and machine learning models. This entails collaboration with our talented ML team that values curiosity, humility, drive and teamwork.

How you’ll make an impact:

- Tech Writing: Translate Upstart’s highly technical proprietary technology into language accessible to external stakeholders while maintaining discretion and confidentiality in documents such as reports for regulators and sales guides for bank partners
- Model Updates: Monitor, record and report changes in machine-learning models for internal and external stakeholders (e.g., regulators, bank partners, and auditors).
- Metrics: Formulate, track and disseminate metrics related to model and product performance over time
- Create content and new processes to structure, upload, and organize content into the content management system
- Participate in the content creation process, including creating and publishing newsletters, scripts, lessonly modules, Atlassian pages, presentations, and more
- Own the technical editing process for documents produced by Upstart’s machine learning team including creating and implementing formalized content style guides and templates
- Potential to become a leader and take on more responsibility over time

What we’re looking for:

Minimum requirements:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate highly technical data and processes into language that can be understood by internal and external stakeholders
- Working knowledge of statistics, econometrics, or machine learning methods.
- Experience cataloguing and documenting model governance processes to a high level of detail using GitHub, Jira, Confluence, G-Suite and/or related tools
- Ability to work cross functionally between technical and non-technical teams
- Ability to prioritize among competing demands, communicate effectively in a team environment, and meet documentation deadlines reliably and efficiently

Preferred qualifications:
- Advanced degree including coursework in quantitative areas of study and/or equivalent professional experience with demonstrated writing and research abilities
- Research interests and/or knowledge of consumer credit or fair lending practices is a plus
